Some stones are set after the metalwork is finished.
This one wasn't.
A natural rough diamond was placed directly into the piece and molten silver was poured around it in a single cast. Diamond can withstand the intense heat involved, allowing the stone and silver to come together as the piece is formed.
The result can't be made perfectly predictable. The silver moves, cools and takes shape around the raw stone, leaving behind a piece created as much by fire and chance as by hand.
